Hannah imhoff: art licence
Opens 17 October, 2024

About
The Art Licence shop is a playful look into the dialogue between artists and institutions, acknowledging the absurdity of greater institutional structures by merging the openly accessible Kabinett kiosk with the ubiquitously gated practice of collecting art. This creates a dynamic and interactive art experience that engages visitors directly, both during and after their visit to the exhibition.
Participants will be invited to take small objects from the shop that are representative of what would be found in an off-licence; such as fridge magnets and sunglasses, to invite a personal dialogue with the works. These human interactions – outside capitalistic behavioural routines – disrupt social systems within the art world, and offer a glimpse into how things could be done differently.
Hannah Imhoff (*1997) is a conceptual artist who sometimes curates with a background in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics based between London and Vienna. Next to her work as a research assistant, her practice interrogates ways that societal norms, political structures, and institutional frameworks shape human behaviour and collective experience.
Rather than using institutions as a backdrop or subject, her work initiates a critical dialogue, challenging their roles to reinforce or destabilise social
conditions. As a member of the feminist network EXTRA stark and London-based collective Successful Artist, Imhoff’s situational practice often focuses on the history and political relevance of specific spaces.
By exploring how everyday acts and behaviours are influenced by societal conditions, she employs the site both as material and context. Her interventions are a response to the consequences of man-made structures, and question not only the environments we inhabit but also our participation within them.
