Blue Plaque for Suella Braverman

About

In December 2023, Freedom From Torture, a British, London-based charity, appropriated the design of London’s infamous blue plaques and installed a plaque for now former Home Secretary Suella Braverman on the Fareham Conservative Association (FCA) building in response to her Illegal Migration Bill.

The plaque suggests that Braverman be recognised for her actions contributing to the ostracisation of refugees, asylum seekers, and unhoused people. Braverman is known for making an array of atrocious statements, including calling Pro-Palestine activism “hate speech,” describing homelessness as a “lifestyle choice,” and working to deport UK’s refugee population to Rwanda.

The iconic blue plaques installed onto the exterior of historic London homes and buildings is a scheme started in 1866 by English Heritage and honours notable men and women for their legacies, tying the past to the present. Over 1,000 plaques can be found across the nation’s capital.

During the installation of the plaque, a police car with four officers pulled up to the Kabinett. Expecting a confrontation, we were pleased to hear that the officers were simply curious and wanted to take a picture. While the officers stated that they were not in a position to comment, they went out of their way to confirm that “in my professional opinion, there is no offence being committed here.”
