About
What happens when we reclaim derelict spaces and use them for something other than their original purpose? Is it regeneration? Is it caretaking? Is it art? How can the strategic occupation of spaces serve the public? How can it be sustainable, and what does sustainability in space mean?
Starting from a concept of space that encompasses imaginary as well as situated spaces, this exhibition critically questions and further develops the idea of art in public space by combining traditional exhibition concepts (Wunderkammer, Kunstkabinett, White Cube) with intervention strategies of street art, resulting in a collision of interior with exterior, public with private, and traditional with avant-garde.
The exhibition exists in two iterations: the first is at the Crystal Kabinett, a disused TFL shelter in Crystal Palace, London. The second is as a fully domesticated exhibition at Outhouse Gallery with all the bells and whistles of institutional exposition that are unavailable at the Kabinett; such as electricity, multiple rooms, and hours of operation.
The two productions investigate how circumstances or blanket binary characteristics influence the potential for transformation. Public, private; central, remote; big, small; Open, closed. Do these contrasting qualities determine what we can do?
The exhibition can be seen in its entirety across both spaces, commencing with a performance on opening night at Outhouse that concludes with a finissage performance at Kabinett. Participating artists challenge binary interpretations of what exhibition making looks like through painting, installation, performance, and moving image.
To accommodate both spaces, these artists adapt their practice regardless of physical circumstance, and inevitably address the question; is what’s Good for the Goose (on view at Crystal Kabinett) also Good for the Gander (on view at Outhouse Gallery)?
