Is it Art Though?

Interactions and Interventions with the Public

About

Probably the most interesting feature of the Kabinett is its acute publicness; installed curbside on a wide patch of sidewalk in front of a sprawling council estate and directly across from a busy neighbourhood venue that hosts a variety of cultural events, the Kabinett is on view from all angles.

After numerous encounters between the public and the Kabinett, we posed the question, IS IT ART THOUGH?

Who is to say what constitutes an artistic intervention of space? The prompt incites questions of authorship, ownership, and intention.

Is art defined by its intention or its interpretation?

Does intention have to be validated or verified? Who has the authority to decide? Furthermore, does the public realm change this? Who makes the art, and whom does it belong to?

Who owns the public?

Protests of the convention of the newly elected Eritrean government in the Lighthouse venue (located directly across the street) saw thousands of protestors and riot police in and around the Kabinett for the entire day and night on 30 December, 2023.

The Kabinett gets vandalised by a local resident who regularly writes on infrastructure like electricity boxes and bus stops up and down Camberwell Road / Walworth Road.

Rough sleepers use the Kabinett as a place to sleep and store their belongings during a cold snap in winter.
