The installation seeks to shed light on the hidden relationship between art work and “other” work.

First exhibited at The Shop Front, Margate in April/May 2024 and Salon, Margate in October 2024, The Cleaner is a project that continues to evolve from a portrait of labour in Margate’s Airbnb industry.

The experience of cleaning holiday flats is seen through the lens of Hughes’ ceramic practice, which would not have been possible without a second job.
