POTATO EUROPE

About
The invisible line separating Potato Europe from Tomato Europe runs through the middle of France, continuing on to sever Croatia from Slovenia, Austria from Hungary, and Ukraine from Romania.
The seemingly arbitrary line is meant to be understood as a joke, poking fun at the cultural differences between countries whose climate is better suited to tomatoes (vibrant, warm, and friendly) or potatoes (structured, cold, and gruff).
The notion of a Potato Europe and a Tomato Europe is also an insular example of the conception of the Global North and the Global South: a divisive and perhaps limiting way to define culture by the designation of its land mass.
Ten bags of potatoes were placed inside the Kabinett.
After one day, the small cluster of potatoes from the shelf were gone and by the second day, the Kabinett was empty. All that remained were small concave divots in the sand to show where the potatoes had lain.
During a time of rising unemployment and a cost of living crisis, it comes as no surprise that local residents were able to recognise the value of a nourishing tuber, regardless of the country or culture with which they identify.
