Ghosts of Heinrich-Roller-strasse

During the recordings for the project “Dead silence – Negotiating noise with the non-living” in Leise Park in Prenzlauer Berg, I also recorded my walks from my home to Leise Park. This is one of these recorded walks that stayed with me, and that I often return to. Heinrich-Roller-strasse is usually a quiet street, but is very busy in this recording. It feels to me as if the sounds of the people represent those no longer there, or perhaps the dead who are buried in Leise Park inhabiting the aural spaces around the park.

Death cries of an escalator in Ostkreuz

I recorded this after an accident when I had several surgeries over a year, putting metal wires, strong medications and other artificial elements  in my body to make it function. In the care process I gave up control over my body and felt it become more artificial and foreign. I started doing field recordings to save my sanity. During visits to Ostkreuz I heard the sad organic sounds of the escalator breaking down over several days, and I felt related to the escalator in our foreign organic / artificial states of breaking down.
